Top 5 Tips For Taking Better Digital Photographs

Top 5 Tips For Taking Better Digital Photographs

Everyone loves taking pictures, but some people just seem to be better at it than others. With the following tips, you too can start down the road of becoming a better digital photographer.

1. The light in your environment will make pictures look great.

Try to avoid using the flash if you can. Flashes can be unkind to our faces, making us look pale in the resulting photographs. Usually you should be able to find enough natural light in the environment to take the picture without the flash.

2. Don't forget about the background.

Sometimes the background can be distracting. You wouldn't want to take a picture of your children playing at the park with a portable toilet in the background, or a garbage truck speeding by. Try moving yourself and/or your subject a few steps to either side; it could make all the difference.

3. Remember the rule of thirds.

Imagine a tic-tac-toe criss-cross drawn on your viewfinder, dividing the view into nine equal parts. Some cameras even draw it for you. The four points formed by the intersections of the lines can be used to align features in the photograph. You don't want your subject in the dead center of the picture; it just doesn't look right. Try aligning one of the intersections on the focal point of the photograph, it will make the picture much more interesting.

4. Think about your shooting angle.

Trying a new and creative angle will sometimes make a big difference in the composition of your shot. See what happens if you stand on top of a raise surface and point down at your subject. Try taking a picture from the side when they're not paying attention. Just get creative and have fun, you never know what you'll end up with.

5. Use the whole frame for your subject.

Get close to the person you're photographing. Not too close, but close enough to fill the frame with what you intend to take a picture of, not a bunch of noise in the background.

If you follow these tips, you'll be taking better pictures in no time!
