Everyone loves going to the beach! If you are not a family who is lucky enough to live near the water, however, you might be unfamiliar with what you need when you hang out in the sand all day. Taking a vacation to Hawaii, Southern California, or one of the many lakes throughout North America is a great idea and every family ends up having a wonderful time. In order to make sure that everyone stays safe, however, you need to follow a few simple tips. Grab your sunglasses and let's go!
1) Swimming Lessons. When you travel to the beach, no one plans to spend the whole day on the sand! Everyone loves jumping in the water so you need to make sure that you and the kids know how to stay afloat even if you plan to go in only a few feet. For the younger children, make sure they have "floaties," inflated plastic arm wraps, that will help keep their head above the water.
2) Comfortable, appropriate clothing. Sand gets everywhere! You do not want to have to put on a tight pair of jeans after you have had your feet and legs in the sand all day. Your skin will get irritated and you will be miserable the whole car ride home! Swimsuits and flip flops are mandatory and I recommend loose t-shirts and skirts as well as designer or cheap sunglasses that are comfortable to wear all day.
3) Big towels and toys. No trip to the beach is complete without building a sandcastle or digging for buried treasure! Grab those plastic shovels and buckets and you are good to go! You also cannot show up to the beach with bath towels. That will label you as a tourist immediately! Beach towels are much larger, and ideally you would be able to lie down on one and not have to touch the sand at all. These large towels are easy to find in any beach town for a great discount.
4) Sun protection. This item may be last on my list, but it is the most important! Lather on that sun block and make sure that you are wearing your designer sunglasses at all times! Your eyes are just as sensitive to the UV light as your skin so, to avoid all types of sun damage, make sure you wear your 100% UV protection shades. When you purchase sunscreen, you need to get waterproof sun block that is at least SPF 30, if not more. Reapply that sunscreen often!
Now you are ready to hit the beach! Follow my simple rules and you will look like professional beachgoers that know how to stay safe and have fun.
