10 Ways to Spoil Yourself and Improve your Health

These days, more and more of our time is overrun by the stress that pervades every aspect of their lives. Work is ever-more pressured, children have and endless stream of things that need doing and household admin is time consuming. Getting things done is all part of a days work, the end of which sees you exhausted and weary.

What few people know, however, is that never finding a moment to relax can be harmful to your health. Some of the less severe symptoms of this phenomenon are feelings that included frustration, exhaustion and a sense of being overwhelmed and out of balance. More serious consequences include headaches, indigestion, insomnia, palpitations, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive sweating which are physical manifestations of an emotional problem.

While it isn’t practical to shed important commitments in your life, like work or your family, there are a number of steps that you can take to help you relax, unwind and treat yourself. Rewarding yourself for the manner in which you manage the stress in your life will help you alleviate anxiety and cope with the pressures that it inevitably presents.

Spoil yourself - you deserve it!

1) Do some exercise. As long as you don’t see it as a chore, but rather as some much needed ‘you-time’, exercise can have incredible stress relieving properties. So hit the gym or even better, pound out your day’s frustration on the tar. Not only will you work off some stress, but you’ll feel good about yourself, get fitter, sleep better and ultimately maintain your health.

2) Find a new hobby. Learning to do something gives people a sense of achievement. It also provides a platform for you to reaffirm your self-identity and meet new people with interests that are similar to yours. Hobbies provide an outlet for people’s creativity that is often otherwise stifled.

3) Do something self-indulgent at least once a week. While this might seem challenging or sound expensive, there is no need for it to be either of those things. Amazing Vouchers is a system where a small monthly subscription fee entitles you to R3000 worth of gift vouchers and discounts. Many of these are for beauty treatments, manicures pedicures and other delightful goodies that will make you feel pampered and special and give you the time out from the stresses in your life that you need.

4) Go shopping. There are few better ways to spoil yourself than with a morning of retail therapy. Buy yourself a book or a new item of clothing, try on a dress you’d never buy, sample new make-up colours or enjoy a latte in your favourite coffee shop.

5) Meet your friends for coffee, for dinner or for a drink. Reconnecting with old friends, catching up on the latest gossip and sharing an experience with people external to your day to day life can be very healthy. It’s an opportunity for you to laugh and let your hair down for long enough for you to unwind.

6) Take fifteen minutes for yourself every day. Sit alone somewhere quiet and concentrate on breathing deeply. Relax your shoulders, try to forget about the things that need doing and enjoy your own company for a little while.

7) Get an early night at least once a week. Sleeping is integral to coping with the pressures in your life and nothing feels quite as indulgent as a bath and being in bed by 9pm. The impact of lack of sleep manifests in a similar manner to that of extreme unrelieved stress, and it’s important to ensure that you don’t suffer from both.

8) Plan a weekend away just for yourself, for a group of your friends or a romantic break for you and your partner. The anticipation of a respite from the stresses of your daily life might be enough to make it more manageable, and the weekend itself is guaranteed to be a welcome treat.

9) Go for a walk, alone or with a pet, to your local park. Enjoy the feeling of being outdoors and away from the pressures of your home.

10) Read a book. This recreational activity is in some ways a form of escapism, but in others it is a good method of keeping the mind active while still getting in some relaxation time.

If you take the time to treat yourself a little, not only will you be happier and more relaxed as an individual, but you will resent less the other things that take up your time. You are also likely to work more productively and achieve more in the time you have because your body will be better adapted to coping with your stressful lifestyle.
